President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled a commemorative plaque to launch the Gamsberg Phase II Expansion Project at Aggeneys, Northern Cape, on Friday.

The facility is managed by Vedanta Zinc International.

The project’s second phase, is expected to increase the mine’s annual zinc-in-concentrate capacity to an estimated 500,000 tonnes per annum.

This places Gamsberg, among the world’s leading zinc-producing facilities, joining Alaska’s Red Dog Mine, with an output of 580,000 tonnes.

Dr. Zamani Saul, Premier of the Northern Cape, Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, and Mayors from the Namakwa District, were part of the proceedings.
