The raising of the Kempdale Dam wall in Kokstad, to 7,8 meters, from 4m, is well underway.

The Harry Gwala District Municipality said, local leaders and municipal management visited the  site on Wednesday this week.

The R160 million project, is expected to take three years to complete.

Water demand for Kokstad is 10.35 millilitres per day and is estimated to increase to 14.45 millilitres per day by 2030.

The project will benefit eight wards within the Greater Kokstad Local Municipality with uninterrupted, adequate and clean water supply upon completion of the collaborative initiative between the Department of Water and Sanitation, Municipalities , farming communities, businesses and residents.

Zamo Nxumalo, District Mayor of The Harry Gwala District Municipality, said the Kempsdale Dam Project, is regarded as a “lifetime” end to water challenges in Kokstad.

The project will also boost raw water capacity in the dam to meet a projected future demand up to 2040.

It will also ensure adequate, safe, reliable and sustainable potable water supply in Kokstad.

The Municipality said leadership also visited the Kokstad satellite office to motivate the workers to observe the working conditions.

They also walked about 4 km within the houses in the area, taking stock of water challenges and headed to the Sanitation Project and Refurb / Upgrade of Bhongweni Infrastructure.
