The City of Johannesburg’s Roads Agency (JRA) has committed R23 million towards a drain conversion project.

The announcement was made by the MMC for Transport, Kenny Kunene and Zweli Nyathi, the CEO of the JRA, at a construction site, in Braamfischerville, on Wednesday, the 04th June 2025.

The plan is to convert open drain channels to closed systems.

Kunene said “due to its unique topography, Region C experiences severe flooding during heavy rains.”

The newly proposed system, will have an enclosed 500mm area, expected to have culverts, with big enough pipes to remove water risk management and to also have a  look and feel, that will compliment the area.

Nyathi said at the event, “open stormwater channels – while serving their primary function of drainage, pose immediate risk to children, pedestrians and motorists during flooding.”

JRA said about 20 locals will be employed by the project, through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
