The class of 2025 smashed records to be the first ever to achieve an overall pass rate of 88% in their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

Speaking at a celebration dinner on Monday evening, Siviwe Gwarube, Minister of Basic Education, said KwaZulu-Natal topped all the provinces, with a pass rate of a combined 90.6%, followed by the Free State (89.33%) and Gauteng – 89.06%. 

Of the 778 000 learners enrolled for the 2025 NSC, more than 650 000 passed the 2025 matric exams, a testament to the dedication of learners, educators, and parents.

Top performing districts are Johannesburg West (96,20%), Overberg (92,36%), Pinetown (92,20%) and Tshwane North (92,03%).
