The Riverine Rabbit is Critically Endangered with possible extinction.
It is one of the animals listed on the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT)Red List, on mammals in South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland.
The Rabbit, which is found mainly in the Nama Karoo, in the Northern Cape, is threatened by livestock grazing and cultivation, according to Cape Nature.
This special Karoo bunny, causes riverine vegetation that it eats, to bind to the soil.
This prevents it from being washed away in floods.
Also, this vegetation supports the filtration of rainwater to groundwater, to the benefit of farmers.
The red list was last published in 2016, by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), EWT, Government (DAFF), Oppenheimer & Sons and the De Beers Group of Companies.
It provides the latest information of endangered mammals, with more than 340 species.
According to the red list, 17% of mammals assessed, are threatened with extinction, while 10% are near threatened.
De Winston’s Golden Mole is also listed as Critically Endangered with possible extinction. Others on the same list include the Blue Whale and the Boosman’s Long-tailed Forest Shrew.
