An emergency isolation of the Mayfair Substation, was conducted on Friday evening, the 06th June 2025.
City Power said this was necessary because the same transformer tripped twice, since the 01st of June 2025, plunging areas supplied from the system in darkness.
These include Brixton, Brixton Water Towers, Brixton Police Station, Crown, Crosby, Vredepark, and the SABC precinct.
City Power’s Isaac Mangena, said the first time the transformer tripped, extensive testing and oil samples were conducted, and soon thereafter, power was restored, on Wednesday, this week.
But when the same transformer tripped again on Friday afternoon, technicians suspected a deeper underlying fault.
“We are now in a position where we need to totally isolate the substation in a bid to install a link between the two points of supply.
Our dedicated teams are currently onsite awaiting further material which include a 300-metre- long cable. Upon the delivery of the material, this process of linking supply towards full restoration will commence.”
The process is expected to take up to eight hours to complete.
