A 31-year old man was swept away by a strong current, in Apel, part of the Sekhukhune District, on Monday evening.

Police said an intensive search operation was launched, in the Atok River.

Reports suggest the man was attempting to cross the river, when a strong current tipped his car over.

The story was narrated by a male passenger, who survived the accident, and was taken to a local clinic.

Police said the search team is made up of Apel SAPS, SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, local security services, and mine personnel, including drone pilots, as well as EMS personnel.

His vehicle was recovered.

“We extend our gratitude to every stakeholder who has been working tirelessly since this tragic incident. We urge community members to exercise extreme caution when approaching or attempting to cross rivers, particularly during heavy rainfall and flooding,” said Hadebe.
