An upper-air trough has moved over the south-western parts of the country, landing in the Western Cape and Northern Cape, as from Thursday.
Tokelo Chiloane of the South African Weather Service (SAWS) said the system is bringing along scattered to widespread showers, thunder and severe weather.
Scattered showers are expected to shift to the Eastern Cape by Saturday, while conditions will begin to clear over the Western and Northern Cape.
The system is expected to exit the country, on Sunday, with KwaZulu-Natal likely to experience scattered showers and thundershowers.
