Residents of Marshalltown, and surrounding areas in the Johannesburg central (CBD), have no electricity, following a fire at the Central Substation on Saturday.

The fire burnt down equipment and underground cables.

City Power’s Isaac Mangena, said technical assessments confirmed both incomer breakers at the substation were also damaged by the incident.

“Restoration work is therefore focused on repairing and stabilising these components to enable the safe return of supply to all affected areas” he said.

In addition, the cooling systems for the transformers were disrupted due to a blown fuse.

Work is also underway to remove water from underground tunnels.

This is expected to provide easy access to damaged infrastructure for inspection and repairs.

Mangena also said City Power successfully restored power to Selby, Standard Bank, Carlton Centre and surrounding areas.
