About 12 waste recyclers were inspected, to check for compliance with the requirements of environmental laws (NEMA, NEMWA & NEMAQA), in Rosslyn and Klerksrood on Tuesday.
The aim was to address the challenge of mushrooming illegal plastic waste recyclers.
The Gauteng Department of Environment’s Chief Directorate of Compliance and Enforcement, called this exercise a “plastic waste recycling blitz.”
In an update, the Department said Tuesday’s focus, was on melting of waste plastics and their production/processing from monomer facilities.
“The compliance monitoring blitz represents a proactive approach to addressing air quality management and the effective regulation of emissions from plastic waste facilities in Gauteng.”
It was done in conjunction with the City of Tshwane Environmental Management inspectors, Tshwane Metro Police, Tshwane emergency management services and the South African Police.
