A storm left a trail of destruction in Ulundu, KwaZulu Natal (KZN).

Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, said a resident was killed by a lightning strike, while three others were injured in Ward 12 and are receiving medical care. 

About 12 homes were utterly destroyed by the storm, leaving four families displaced in Ward 15.

Buthelezi also said provincial disaster management teams are assisting residents in the Harry Gwala and uMgungundlovu Districts.

The weather service warned against heavy downpours that could lead to floods in the Eastern, Western Cape as well as parts of KZN on Sunday.

Two people were killed by floods in the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality, and King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality. 

Communities affected are the Ingquza Hill, Kumkani Mhlontlo, King Sabata Dalindyebo, Nyandeni and Port St Johns, where damages extended to homes, roads, crops and local infrastructure.

More than 260 households were destroyed, displacing, over 160 families people. 

Water supply to Ward 26 in Nyandeni Local Municipality was successfully restored following extensive flood-related damage to critical infrastructure serving the Coffee Bay Water Works. 

The SAWS also said it is monitoring a tropical storm “Gezani” currently east of Madagascar.

There is currently no threat to South Africa, although the storm is expected to slip into Mozambique towards the end of the week.
