Tajikistan, a country in Central Asia, close to Afghanistan and China, is now a member state of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). 

The announcement was made in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, this week, at a High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation, and Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Resilience, Glacier Preservation and Water cooperation. 

It was attended by scientists, policymakers, communities, civil society and international organizations.

The IUCN said this move to join the IUCN, reflects the country’s leadership in nature conservation, glacier preservation, transboundary water cooperation and climate action at a critical moment for the world’s ecosystems and societies. 

“We are proud to stand alongside Tajikistan as partners in conservation, bringing together science, policy and partnerships for greater impact.”

The Conference culminated in the Dushanbe Glaciers Declaration, a document with recommendations, pointing to integrated climate solutions, such as nature-based approaches, early warning systems, and sustainable agrifood systems, alongside strengthened transboundary cooperation and inclusive partnerships. 

The declaration also calls for closing the glacier adaptation finance gap, embedding glacier preservation into risk and investment strategies, and centering the voices and knowledge of women, youth, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities.
