Three minors died after they were struck by lightning on Monday afternoon, at an initiation school, outside Koekoe Village, in Kroonstad.
There were reportedly seven of them in total.
The remaining four, were admitted at the Boitumelo hospital for medical treatment.
They are aged between 16 and 28 years old.
Last week Thursday, two were also struck at Magagamatala and in Sepakapakeng villages in Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality, Limpopo.
A tornado was also seen by residents on the same day, in Heilbron, Free State.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) confirmed there was indeed a tornado in a farm between 15h00 and 16h00 pm.
The Weather Service’s Lehlohonolo Thobela, a Forecaster, said in a statement on Tuesday, there were thunderstorms that matured to be more severe in the area.
“There were gusts around the region with identified shearing, convergence and moisture to form a convective cloud. Which resulted in a super cell at a later stage. The conditions were favourable for a tornado to form.”
Thobela also said research points to a collision between moist, converging air and unstable environments, triger typical conditions conducive for tornadic and severe-convective activity in parts of South Africa like the Highveld, Free State, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal.
