Tswelopele Municipality is officially the cleanest in the Free State.
The Municipality was awarded a cash price of about R 3million rands. Mantsopa municipality came second and Dihlabeng third.
18 Local municipalities participated in the competition. However, only five municipalities met all the stringent requirements.
The Cleanest Town Competition was initiated in 2001, by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment with the aim of implementing the National Waste Management Strategy.
The competition encourages Municipalities to find ways to reduce, recycle and reuse waste materials.
Makgotso Sotyu, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, said “the main objective of the awards, is to encourage greening initiatives and a culture of a clean environment.”
