The City of Tshwane had to beef up security to accompany waste picking trucks, as it started its catch up plan during the weekend.
Residents of Lotus Gardens were pictured below protesting the disconnection of services.
In addition, the City did not collect household waste on time.
Chris Kok (not his real name), resident of Elardus Park, said bins were not collected for about 2 weeks.
In a statement, the City said it is embarking on a catch up bin-lifting plan for households. It says there are newly appointed service providers, who started work on Monday, the 15th July 2024.
“Approximately 60% of the previous waste contractors have not made it back onto the new tender owing to the stringent specifications aimed at improving efficiency” said the City.
The City also said it suspects the previous service providers are disgruntled and have resorted to threatening and displaying aggression towards drivers of new contractors.
Areas affected are Rosslyn, Garankuwa, Mabopane, Soshanguve, Sinoville/Montana/Temba/Hammanskraal and Pretoria inner City.
