Where residents dispose of waste, is under scrutiny, as Municipalities close to the coast, urge residents to comply with by-laws.
The City of Cape Town has shared pictures of over 6000kg of waste removed from sewer pump stations monthly.
About 260kg of waste is extracted at each pump station daily and then removed and transported to a solid waste dumping facility such as Vissershoek Landfill.
The City said in a statement, its teams extract solid waste from screens (Waste Water Treatment Works) daily, to protect infrastructure and prevent overflows.
Such waste is made up of rags, condoms, sanitary pads, wet wipes and nappies.
Elsewhere in the Eastern Cape, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), warned residents against leaving builders’ rubble on sidewalks of the City.
Other material dumped, include broken bricks, concrete and construction waste.
The Municipality also urged residents to arrange for proper disposal or removal of such materials.
Failure to do so, may result in fines or other penalties as stipulated by the municipality’s regulations on waste management and urban upkeep.
