Two beaches in the Eastern Cape are temporarily shut, following whale carcasses that washed out in at least three areas, this weekend.
The beaches are the Eastern Beach, Kaysers Beach as well as Gonubie Reef (across the river), in East London, part of the Buffalo Municipality.
The City said in a statement on Sunday, its Environmental Services and Coastal Management teams, are treating the matter with urgency.
It also said the beaches are closed to protect visitors, as carcasses may attract marine predators, such as sharks.
“We strongly advise residents and visitors to avoid swimming, fishing, or approaching the affected areas.”
The City also asked residents must be patient while its teams work with environmental experts to determine next steps.
Last month, another whale carcass washed out at Keyser Beach.
