Scientists from Russia, have revived a 32,000 year old plant from the Pleistocene era.
It is the oldest plant ever to be “resurrected” by seeds grown some 32,800-years ago.
The plant is known as the silene stenophylla. It is white in colour, and is indigenous to Siberia and the mountains of Northern Japan.
This plant is not to be confused with South Africa’s resurrected plant, also called the Myrothamnus flabellifolius). Its common name is the resurrection plant, opstandingsplant (Afrikaans); uvukakwabafile (isiZulu); umazifisi (Ndebele).
The leaves of SA’s resurrection plant, according to PlantZA, appear to be dead in the dry season, but miraculously turn green within a few minutes after exposure to water.
