Today marks day 4 of the 15th Commonwealth Regional Conference of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa, held at the Westin Hotel, in Cape Town.
The conference was officially opened by the Mmamoloko Kubayi, Minister for Justice and Constitutional Development, on Thursday, the 5th May 2025.
Deliberations focused on tangible outcomes to strengthen anti-corruption efforts across the African continent, which include strategies such as sharing cutting-edge tools and frameworks to detect, investigate, and prosecute corruption.
Kubayi said about 5% of the world’s GDP is lost to corruption every year.
“The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that if all countries were to reduce corruption, they could gain an estimated $1 trillion in lost revenues.
In addition, every year trillions of dollars that could be used to fund social development, are lost to corruption, bribery, embezzlement and illicit financial flows.”
Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka, Public Protector of South Africa, also delivered a presentation at the Conference, so did Advocate Andy Mothibi, Chief Executive Officer of Special Investigation Unit (SIU South Africa) who recognised the role played by the Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre (CAACC) for consistently training officers from the Commonwealth Africa on various anti-corruption topics.
He further recognized the role played by Dr Roger Koranteng, in making sure that the Conference bears fruits.
