The Tiryville Dam is full and has begun overflowing, and there are fears it might burst.
Should it burst, Lapland will flood, aggravating an already tender situation.
Sithembiso Soyaya, Spokesperson of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, told Earthnews365, that about 600 people were evacuated from Lapland and surrounding areas.
But others refuse to be evacuated due to their connection to the land and fear of losing their belongings.
The dam is actually on private land, but Soyaya, said officials from the Municipality, assessed its integrity this morning.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an alert for more heavy rains for today and tomorrow for the Eastern Cape’s coast and adjacent interior.
