A funeral service of some of the victims of the floods was held in Kwabhaca, Mount Frere, in the Eastern Cape, on Saturday.

About 92 people have lost their lives since the day of the floods, on the 10th June 2025.

Gift of the Givers, one of the organisations on the ground, assisting with search and rescue efforts and after care, suspects some 50 more people are still missing.

On Saturday, the funeral of some of the victims, got underway, with both mom and son (Gloria and Kwanele Giwu), buried on the same day, in Lugangeni Village.

Another resident, Papaya Ndobeni, lost at least four members of her family in the floods. She wrote publicly about her pain, on social media ahead of the memorial service, held on Friday.

“Today, I stood at King Sabata Dalindyebo College, not just as a guest, but as one of the families deeply wounded by the floods.
I stood there for my sister, my in-law, my nephew, and my niece —all taken too soon, too suddenly.” 💔🌊

The Nyandeni Municipality has opened the hall in Ward 10, to be used temporarily by some of the victims.
