The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) said it has adopted a proactive approach of maintaining the Vaal Dam at full capacity, until the start of the summer rainy season, to safeguard water security and prepare for possible drought conditions. 

Water levels in the Vaal Dam, rose from 106.3% last week to a current 107.3%.

The dam is a vital component of the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS), and stores approximately 2.57 billion cubic metres of water, to supply Gauteng and the Free State.

The Department also said the Grootdraai Dam decreased slightly from 99.4% to 98.6%, Sterkfontein Dam – 99.1%, Bloemhof Dam at 108.4% this week.

In contrast, dams managed as part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, such as the Katse Dam dropped from 90.6% to 89.5%, and the Mohale Dam also decreased by a margin, from 102.1% to 101.9%.
