Reports and alerts are flooding social networks about the need to evacuate the community of Suidkaap, due to a possible collapse of the Senteeko Dam (Barberton-Kaapsehoop).
The Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Melalane, said the dam will take several hours to empty, while the water heads for the Crocodile River.
The De Kaap River was flowing at 70 cubic meters per second on Monday, the 19th January 2025.
Philip Minnaar, Councillor of the area, wrote the Kaap River Irrigation Board alerted all users downstream the Kaap River, to start evacuating.
Current estimated inflow into the River is 300m³/h.
Affected Rivers are Suidkaap, Lower Queens at confluence with Suidkaap (Daisy Kopje), Lower Noordkaap at confluence with Suidkaap (Consort mine), Eureka IB, Low’s Creek IB, Laer-kaap IB and the Kaap & Crocodile confluence at Matsulu/Kaapmuiden.
