It will cost an estimated R421 million to reconstruct parts of Meiringspoort pass 

Three sections of the Meiringspoort pass were completely washed away by recent floods. 

Road shoulders and supporting structures were destroyed.

About 1.7 metres deep over lengths of 20 to 25 metres were washed away.

Linda Jaquet, Mayor of the Prince Albert Municipality, said repairs will occur in three stages.

“Phase 1 will include the cleaning and removal of debris, while the second phase will include structural engineering assessment and  final cost estimation.”

Preliminary damage estimate exceed R421 million.

It will take about 26 months (excluding the initial cleaning phase) to complete the project.
