A flagged cargo ship, from Panama, the MV Ultra Galaxy was abandoned by its crew of 18 seafarers.
It is believed strong winds during the week, reaching 35-50 knots and high sea swells exceeding 3.5 meters, led to shipping movements being suspended at some ports for safety reasons.
A statement from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), confirmed the incident on Wednesday, and said it is prioritizing efforts to prevent a fuel and oil spill.
Goods on board were a full load of fertilizer in bags, and low sulphur bunkering fuel in addition to hydraulic and related oils.
SAMSA also confirmed in a statement the crew was successfully rescued and evacuated from the cargo ship on Tuesday morning.
“Salvage operations are currently underway for the stricken vessel, Ultra Galaxy, off the coast of Brand se Baai on the West Coast.”
The Panama-registered MV Ultra Galaxy (previously known as Thor Galaxy and Thorco Galaxy) is a 124.56-meter-long general cargo vessel built in 2008, it was headed to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, at the time of its distress.
