Small scale fishermen from Ebenhaeser and Papendorp say they are unable to catch fish, following the oil spill on the West Coast.

Masifundise Development Trust’s Jordan Volmink, said in a statement, the oil is suspected to have come from the MV Ultra Galaxy Cargo vessel, stranded on the West Coast last year.

He said Summer months are the peak season for fishing on the West Coast, a season to secure income for many.

“While we acknowledge the ongoing clean up operations, critical questions remain: Who will be held accountable for this environmental disaster?”

He also urged authorities to take action to protect fishers’ livelihoods and the marine environment.
