Disaster management teams in KZN are on high alert, after the South African Weather Service (SAWS), warned against heavy rains (level 6), expected from Monday, 6 January 2025, to Wednesday, 8 January 2025.
Rev Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in KwaZulu-Natal, said inclement weather conditions are expected to result in localized floods.
Areas most monitored are Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, eThekwini, Jozini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mkhambathini, Mthonjaneni, Ndwedwe, Nongoma, Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni, Umhlabuyalingana, uMhlathuze, uMlalazi, Umzumbe, uPhongolo.
Residents across the province are urged to take heed of the severe weather warning and to take all necessary safety precautions.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has also warned against heavy rains (level 5) in Gauteng.
Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, MMC of Public Safety in Gauteng, said the Disaster Management Centre has activated Level 3 protocols for rain expected on Monday, the 06th January 2025.
This means all stakeholders, including local utilities are on high alert such as the Johannesburg Road Agency, Joburg Water, City Power, City Parks and Zoo, and Emergency Management Services.
Areas monitored are Bela Bela, the City of Johannesburg, the City of Tshwane, Dipaleseng, Elias Motsoaledi, Emakhazeni, Emalahleni, Emfuleni, Ephraim Mogale, Govan Mbeki, Lesedi, Makhuduthamaga, Mbombela, Sabie, Merafong, Midvaal, Mkhondo, Mogale City, Rand West City, Westonaria.
