Fixing damaged infrastructure subsequent to floods of the 10th June 2025, in the Eastern Cape, will require R5 billion.

This emerged during a visit to assess affected areas, by Zolile Williams, MEC of Cooperative Governance (Cogta) in the Eastern Cape, this week.

The repairing of damaged areas is underway, including 235 schools, 69 health facilities, 149 roads and 91 bridges.

Williams also said suitable land was identified  to temporarily house 1,230 units, in Mnquma and King Sabata Dalindyebo.

It will cost another R120 million, while another R461 million is sourced for more units.

About 4,724 were left homeless after the June 10th floods destroyed 6,800 households.

So far, 103 bodies were recovered, 63 of which are adults and 40 children.

79 of the victims came from the OR Tambo District, 10 from Amathole District, 5 from Alfred Nzo, 5 from Chris Hani, 2 from Joe Gqabi and another 2 from the Sarah Baartman District.
