The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has announced its return to the negotiation table, to continue with salary and wage negotiations for the country’s municipal workers.
The Union will be meeting with South African Local Government Bargaining Council (SALGBC),
from the 12th to the 16th August 2024.
This is the third time the two will be trying to resolve details of a salary and wage agreement for Municipal workers.
The first two offers, SAMWU labeled as “provocative and undermining.”
SAMWU wants a minimum wage of R9890, despite an advisory issued by the National Treasury.
Dumisane Magagula, SAMWU General Secretary, said in a statement, “SAMWU is deeply concerned by the National Treasury’s recent advisory to municipalities to budget for wage increases between 3% and 6% for municipal workers. This advice not only undermines the integrity of the collective bargaining process but also constitutes unacceptable interference in a process that is meant to be between SALGA and the trade unions.”
He said the union is calling on all municipalities to reject what it called “an ill-advised directive from the National Treasury.
Municipalities must respect the autonomy of the collective bargaining process and recognise that these negotiations are between SALGA and the unions, not with the Treasury.”
