5 bidders were appointed under Bid Window 3, to supply battery energy storage.

Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy, announced the preferred bidders on Friday, the 30th May 2025, as Scatec and Mulilo Energy.

About R9,5 billion is expected to procure about 616 Megawatts (MW) to provide ancillary services (including  reserves) and energy capacity to the National Transmission Company (NTCSA), from 5 specified sites in the Free State province.

The two companies will manage 5 sites- Scatec (123 MW Haru Bess project), Mulilo (124 MW-Bloemhoek BESS, 123 MW-Erfdeel BESS, 123 MW- Vanilla BESS and 123 MW- Retreat BESS).

Mulilo Energy expressed excitement and said “this significant achievement reflects the collaborative effort and dedication of our entire team and solidifies Mulilo’s position as the leading BESS Independent Power Producer in South Africa.”
