Two heads of state and government, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Prime Minister of Lesotho Government, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane are co-chairing a summit to adopt agreements made by both countries.

Pemmy Majodina, Minister of Water and Sanitation, is participating at the 2nd Session of the Bi-national Commission (BNC) between RSA and the Kingdom of Lesotho, which slicked off in Maseru on Tuesday. 

The Department of Water Affairs said the purpose of the BNC is to take stock of progress from the inaugural session that took place in 2023 and to identify further areas of cooperation.

Majodina and her counterpart, Mohlomi Moleko, Lesotho Minister of Natural Resources, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to kick-start the establishment of a framework of cooperation on the construction of 2 weirs on the Mohokare/ Caledon River for the benefit of the 2 countries.

The Department said the significance of this action, is to reduce sedimentation in South Africa, as well as measuring water quality and tracing floods, while Lesotho needs weirs for its Market Driven Irrigated Horticulture (MDIH) Project.
