A video of water gushing out of a burst pipe close to the M19 in Reservoir Hills, made rounds in eThekwini, on Saturday.

The City of eThekwini’s communications department said on Saturday afternoon, a team from the City’s Water and Sanitation Unit is  currently on site attending to the pipeline, and that water has stopped gushing out.

“An assessment of the extent of the damage, in order to undertake the necessary repairs, is underway. This includes an investigation of what caused the burst” said the City.

The City also said an emergency assessment is underway to gather the extent of assistance required by nearby settlements.

The City also took this opportunity to caution the public against building on water pipelines.

“The public must look out for marker poles painted in orange and yellow for bulk pipelines and blue only for reticulation pipelines.
Encroachment on pipeline servitudes is a risk to human life and property, should the pipes burst.”
