Consumers can now do their part to ensure more energy is saved by buying energy efficient appliances.

A national Energy Efficiency Appliance Standards and Labelling (S&L) Programme, was designed by SANEDI, as tasked by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
The labels indicate energy efficiency levels of appliances.

They have scores from A to G. A is an extremely energy efficient appliant and G the least efficient.

Saving energy is not something we should do in a crisis, said Teslim Mohammed Yusuf, Acting General Manager at the Energy Efficiency Programme, South Africa National Energy Development Institute.

He was speaking at an energy efficiency workshop organized by the French Embassy in Pretoria last week.

He said there is a need to look at the bigger picture with all industry players, when saving energy.

“The most important thing for industry, is to understand the need for energy efficiency (EE), do an audit to determine where the opportunities are, measure, set target, plan and budget how to achieve these targets and then start their implementation journey.”

An energy performance efficiency certificate (EPC), shows the performance of buildings, such as energy consumption.
SANEDI has several projects targeting industry, one, is a  dashboard managing EPCs of about 20 inspection bodies.
