About 120 newly installed prepaid meters at JOSHCO flats in Kliptown Square, were disconnected on Wednesday, by City Power.
City Power said it acted on information received via a tip- off from residents, regarding meter tampering following the normalisation process during the Token Identifier (TID) rollover project in November last year.
The meters affected were removed by the local utility’s technical team, along with circuit breakers, to guarantee no reconnection.
Residents who tampered with meters were also fined more than R14,000 for single-phase connections.
However, penalties can potentially exceed R30,000 for houses with three-phase
connections to replace a tampered meter.
City Power’s Isaac Mangena, said “today’s operation serves as a stern warning to those who continue to bypass their meters within our supply areas.”
