A very hot and dry Summer, are aggravating multiple fires, that have raged on for the ninth day today, in parts of the Cape (West Coast, Boland and Overberg), according to LandWater.
February is expected to remain hot, according to predictions of the South African Weather Services.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services, reported this morning, that the fire that started above the Brandvlei Prison, on Monday afternoon, spread to the slopes of the Dwarsberg Mountains above Rawsonville.
A statement, this morning said “teams battled the fire that was burning rapidly through very tall and dense vegetation, making fire fighting activities difficult and particularly dangerous to all.”
A change in the wind, this morning, led to the protection of structures.
There were no injuries and no properties were damaged.
Two fires are stoll active, the first is running back along the ridge toward its origin at Brandvlei and the other running down the mountain parallel to the Louwshoek road. This fire is burning very close to farms.
The other fires, namely Elandsberg, Bainskloof/Slanghoek and Fairy Glen have been mostly contained and only minor flare-ups were reported during the night.
