Some residents of Wakkerstroom, in Mpumalanga, have shared pictures of the outdoors under freezing minus two conditions.
Morning fog along the escarpment, leading to partly cloudy to cold conditions are expected to continue in Mpumalanga, the Free State and KwaZulu Natal.
Meteorologists expect a “double cold snap” in the coming days, and temperatures to plummet further on Friday, to about 2 degrees in Gauteng.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Nama Khoi municipality in the Namakwa district in the Northern Cape on Monday.
