The Buffalo Municipality has temporarily closed the Kaysers Beach, southwest of East London, in the Eastern Cape, after a whale beached on Friday, the 25th July 2025.

The Municipality said the 12,2 meter whale, is in an advanced state of decomposition, which complicates handling and disposal efforts.

Officials are also assessing the situation to determine next steps, which might be to leave it to decompose and let other animals feed off of it.

But that’s not cast in stone for now.

Bongani Fuzile, Spokesperson of the Mayor of the City, said “we are currently exploring the most effective and safe disposal methods.”

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from the area for their safety and to allow response teams to work unhindered.
