A Pangolin in Kempton Park
First an Armadillo, a male sub-adult Ground Pangolin, also known as Temminck’s pangolin, was spotted in Kempton Park on Friday by Chief Executive Officer, of the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (SAWRC), Judy Davidson.
SAWRC Members (including Justin Coetzee), reportedly arrived on the scene to secure the Pangolin, which was later safely moved to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.
SAWRC said on its social media page “We can safely assume, (based on many previous pangolin cases), that this little ball had been found in another province and brought to Gauteng with the aim of being illegally sold.
Usually this sequence of events will entail a video being circulated on social media by the “seller” which (if the seller is lucky), finds its way to a prospective buyer.
This unfortunately can take several weeks, and frequently, the suffering and cruelty endured by these remarkable creatures is immense.
The sellers cannot, (and don’t care to) feed these captive pangolins their specialized diets, and often, water is not even provided.
This means, the “lucky” cases that are intercepted and rescued, are brought in emaciated, critically dehydrated and frequently, already experiencing organ failure.
For the sellers, if the animal dies.. it dies.”
