The Republic of Korea has affirmed its commitment to climate action by signing its Contribution Agreement with the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
At the GCF headquarters in Songdo, Deputy Minister for International Affairs Ji-Young Choi and GCF Deputy Executive Director Henry Gonzalez signed the agreement confirming Korea’s USD 300 million pledge to the GCF-2 programming period (2024-2027).
This includes an immediate execution of USD 35 million in Q3 this year.
This comes at a time when there are concerns about funding for climate action outside of developed countries, ahead of Cop 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan in November this year.
A US based politician (Congressman Jake LaTurner) took to social media to express dissatisfaction with the GCR, back in June, “Kansas are tired of their taxpayer dollars being used to fund ineffective programs that don’t reflect their values. Here’s how the FY25 State and Foreign Operations bill responsibly stewards taxpayer dollars and supports American principle: Eliminates funding for unnecessary, partisan agendas like President Biden’s Green Climate Fund…. “
