Phase 1 of the mending of the Lilian Ngoyi Street (former Bree Street), is 86% complete.
The Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) said this phase will most likely be completed at the end of August 2025.
The Road was closed in July 2023, when an explosion underground killed one person and injured at least six.
Both phases of the project, amount to about R192 million. R62 million of this amount was spent on the first phase- which was the construction of new tunnels, pavements and the installation of gas, heat, smoke detection and ventilation systems.
Zweli Nyathi, CEO of the JRA, said on Monday, “Lilian Ngoyi and the affected north-south roads, including Joubert, Russia and Eloff, will be opened once the first phase is completed, at the end of August 2025.”
The second phase, which is mainly the rejuvenation of about 1,8 kilometres of the road, is expected to start immediately thereafter, in September 2025, until the end of August 2026.
