The Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA), with its organisations, WAMUA and youth wing-YAMUA, are protesting at the Anglo American offices in Rosebank under the banner: “No TNC Exit Without Community Justice.”

This follows the MAC Summit 2026 held since Tuesday, the 10th February at the Parktonian Hotel in Johannesburg.

Themed “Beyond Green Growth – Toward a People-Led Just Energy Transition” the Summit discussed critical minerals, the energy transition, corporate accountability, and the accelerating exit of transnational mining corporations.

Sanele Mnguni, Spokesperson of MACUA, said “a central focus of the Summit has been Anglo American’s restructuring and withdrawal from key South African operations. As detailed in MACUA’s Memorandum, “A Century of Profit and Plunder”, Anglo’s exit is not merely a corporate decision but a historic reckoning. After more than 100 years of extraction, communities are demanding that the company settle its social, environmental, and economic liabilities before disengaging.”

Throughout the Summit, testimonies from communities in Limpopo, the Free State, Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal,  highlighted ongoing environmental degradation, unfulfilled Social and Labour Plans, job losses, and the long-term consequences of extractive development.

The Summit was attended by communities, legal experts, economists, and trade unionists.

“The MAC Summit has adopted a firm position, there can be no corporate exit without full rehabilitation, transparent accounting of liabilities, and binding commitments to affected communities” said Mnguni.
