In a statement released by the Overstrand Municipality, Law Enforcement Officers arrested a man on Clarence Drive yesterday, the 20th of June 2024, for being in possession of large amounts of crayfish.
This was during a stop and search operation on the R44.
He was caught with 5 989 West Coast Rock Lobster (WCRL) tails and 100 whole WCRL, found in a white Toyota Etios with CEM registration number.
Dean O’Neill, Overstrand Municipal Manager, said
“no person catching WCRL with a recreational permit may sell his/her catch and any WCRL caught, collected or transported must be kept in a whole state.”
By law, a maximum of 20 WCRL’s may be transported per day on condition that all the persons who caught such, have permits and are present in the vehicle, vessel or aircraft during transportation.
Rock lobster populations are low, and thus only limited numbers of the crayfish may be caught.
O’Neill said those who are found with more than four crayfish may face fines or arrest. He also said recreational fishermen are not allowed to sell their catch.
