Two bridges destroyed by the June 2024 floods in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, were reopened on Thursday.
The Matanzima and Nomakhwezana bridges in Kariega, collapsed, subsequent to heavy rains, disconnecting the township of KwaNobuhle, from the City Centre.
The Metro pumped R80 million into the reconstruction and refurbishment project, much to the benefit of 38 small and medium businesses (SMMEs).
About 200 jobs in the construction sector, were also created.
Pali Jongilanga, MMC for Roads and Transport, said “through strict oversight, the Directorate managed to deliver the project on schedule…The quality of work done goes beyond the bridges themselves, it also focuses on building flood-resilient infrastructure, to ensure we do not face the same devastation again.”
Residents expressed relief on social media platforms, with some thanking the leadership of the Municipality, such as Bongani Mali, who said “leaders left their comfort zones to get the job done.”
Zoliswa Mngewu said “it’s about time!”
