Mathematics and Sciences were in the spotlight, as Coega celebrated 12 years of excellence this week, in Gqeberha, at the Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel.
Coega has its own Maths and Science Programme (MSP).
Speaking at the celebration event, Nonkqubela Pieters, Eastern Cape Provincial MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), said the subjects play an important role in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) as a catalyst for sustainable growth and development.
“Our young people were made to believe that maths and science are the two most difficult subjects. However, that is not true.
Most of the scarce skills in the country are STEM related. The Coega MSP has produced engineers, pharmacists, nurses, IT specialists, lab technicians, and this year, the first doctor of the programme will graduate” said MEC Pieters.
Themba Koza, Coega Acting Chief Executive Officer, said the Programme is beacon of opportunity, nurturing bright minds that will shape our future.
“Tonight, we are not only celebrating 12 years of the Coega Maths and Science Programme, but also the impact that it has had on so many lives. We are here to celebrate our alumni; the sacrifice and hard work they have put in” said Koza
