Water outages caused by unstable power supply, are nearly a thing of the past, in Johannesburg South.

City Power’s Isaac Mangena, said the construction of the Mondeor Switching Station, is nearly completed, which should stabilise supply to Rand Water.

The plant cost R190 million, and dragged for  over eight years.

“Currently, Eikenhof is supplied mainly through the Orlando Linking Station, which is very old and has sometimes contributed to water-related outages. With Mondeor in place, Eikenhof will be directly connected to both the Prospect and Fordsburg intake substations, meaning that should the Prospect/Mulbarton/Orlando line experience a fault, the new link will immediately and seamlessly take over” said Mangena, in a statement over the weekend.

Once completed, in February 2026, the plant will be integrated into the existing Mondeor transformer substation, allowing it to feed four substations: Eikenhof, Mulbarton, Mondeor, and Robertsham.

By creating this link between Fordsburg and Prospect, the project will reduce strain on the ageing Orlando Linking Station, while also cutting down switching times.
