A baboon male was spotted at Florida Hill, by resident, Roshin Kamfer, this week.

A day later, other residents posted sightings of him on the Northcliff Koppie, just above Palm Street.

Then he tried moving around to No 7 Hearn Drive, in Northcliff.

He then went to the highest point in the area, the water tower.

Cora Bailey, Founder of the Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW), said this is a nervous animal.

“He is frightened and has no backing of a troop.”

Bailey says the animal has most likely come from around the Cradle of Humankind, West of Johannesburg.

She said vervet monkeys and baboons move from one troop to another, but as urbanisation increases and population pressures squeeze in, wildlife sightings will be regular.

“He is no threat to anyone, doesn’t want to mingle with us, but remembers the route along the Kopppie, where there are now houses and malls.”

The best thing to do, is to stay away from, him, don’t chase him, while Claw and stakeholders make a plan to get him out of the area.
