The construction of the Mpophomeni Waste Water Treatment Plan, in Pietermaritzburg, is expected to cost around R474 million.

The plant has a current capacity of 6 megalitres per day, with room to expand to 12 megalitres.

Once completed , it will provide sanitation services to over 7,000 households in and around Mpophomeni.

Umgeni Water said the project will protect the Mthinzima River and Midmar Dam from pollution and also deliver sanitation to tens of thousands of residents.
