The City of Ekurhuleni has announced that the petrol spillage in the Rietvlei stream was contained on Saturday afternoon.
This follows an accident on Friday evening on the R25 near Kempton Park, involving a petrol tanker which crashed into the bridge, spilling its contents and catching fire.
The company owning the truck has since appointed spill technicians to contain and clean the Rietvlei stream.
The Ekurhuleni City’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services and the Environmental Resources Management Department, are on site, monitoring the situation to oversee the complete drainage of the contaminants from the stream.
Obakeng Ramabodu, a Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Environmental and Agriculture Management, visited the oil spillage site on Saturday.
Ramabodu said “I have been appraised about this accident, which presents a potential hazard to the environment. As an intervention aimed at tackling this incident effectively, a team comprising of environmental management inspectors has been onsite since around 5h00 and mitigation measures are indeed in place at Rietvlei Nature Reserve to minimise pollution.”
He also said post pollution monitoring downstream will continue for the next few days.
