The Turtle Survival Alliance said it lost more than 42 turtles over the weekend, during Cyclone Honde.
The Alliance’s facility at the Lavavolo Tortoise Center (LTC), was gutted by floodwaters estimated at 1,8 meters high or 6 feet tall.
Infrastructure was also damaged in southern Madagascar, impacting tortoise rescue operations.
The Alliance said this is the third cyclone in less than two months.
The previous two cyclones, were Dikeledi, on January 16 and Elvis on January 28, resulting in the loss of about 934 tortoises.
Hery Razafimamonjiraibe, Country Director for Turtle Survival Alliance Madagascar, said
“the relentless onslaught of extreme weather events has put immense strain on conservation efforts, highlighting the urgent need for emergency response initiatives.”
