Overstrand Municipality has embarked on a drive to educate the community about the importance of keeping stormwater pipes and networks clear.

This is done through the Project Storm Stencil campaign.

Dean O’Neill, Municipal Manager, said in a statement on Friday, the project is spearheaded by the Municipality’s Environmental Management & Conservation Division, to help prevent every day litter from entering the local stormwater system.

The campaign is a brainchild of conservation organisations-the Dyer Island and Whale Coast, who use educational stencils with messages like “Don’t litter” and the “Sea Starts here” placed near storm water drains entrance, to remind residents that waste dumped into these drains ends up in the ocean.

In addition, storm socks were installed at key drain outlets across Hermanus, to trap litter, in waterways.

O’Neill said the campaign has begun at schools including the Hermanus Christian Academy, Die Bron Primary in Stanford, Hermanus Primary School and the Hawston Primary School.
